Kitchen hood test sheet

Pick the make and the filter type, enter your readings, and the page works out the exhaust CFM per section and in total, the make-up air, % of design and the exhaust/make-up balance. Every factor on this page comes from the manufacturer sheet or literature named under it. Nothing is saved on this page.

Hood information

HWH = up the filter channel (top to grease trough). W = along the hood length. Greenheck / Accurex print this as H x L (L = W).

Set the tolerance to the job spec. Pass = actual CFM within −tolerance / +tolerance of design.

1 Filter type *

Tap the filter that matches what is in the hood. The filter type picks the factor table for this make.

2 Method and readings

3 Exhaust results

4 Make-up air

Pick the make-up air (supply) plenum or diffuser serving this hood, enter one row per plenum section, and the page totals it and checks the exhaust / make-up balance.

Greenheck / Accurex

Primary: Accurex (a Greenheck company) hood balancing workbook supplied by UTAB (created Nov 2012, last modified Oct 13, 2022) — sheets “Hood Balance (Velocity Grid)”, “Hood Balance-RVA”, “AutoScrubber Balance (Velocity Grid)” and “ASP Balance”. Cross-check / gaps: Greenheck Kitchen Hoods IOM 452413, Rev. 23, March 2024 (Testing Hood Air Volume, pp. 16–18), Accurex Kitchen Hoods IOM 470399, Rev. 23, March 2024 and the Greenheck Air Supply Plenum (ASP) page. Where they differ, this page uses the workbook and notes the IOM value.

Grease-X-Tractor / Grease Grabber exception. The workbook’s X-Tractor factors (Velocity Grid 1.53 / 2.00 / 2.25 / 3.00; rotating vane 1.31 / 1.65 / 1.23 / 1.65, six readings, cooking off) match Accurex IOM 470399 Rev. 19, August 2022, which lists filter P/N 851709 / 851710 / 851712 / 851713 (older filter with rows of cyclone chambers). Rev. 23 (March 2024, Accurex and Greenheck) lists new filter P/N 1036738 / 1036746 / 1036742 / 1036734, new Velocity Grid factors 1.78 / 2.34 / 2.26 / 2.96, new grid positions (Fig. 11–13), and no rotating vane method. Parts Town shows 851709 as obsolete, replaced by 1036738, and the Greenheck X-Tractor page describes the current filter as angled inlets into hollow columns. The page keeps separate current and older cards so techs can identify the filter, but both use the original workbook / Rev. 19 factors, grid positions and rotating vane method, per Accurex guidance to UTAB (October 2026). The Rev. 23 values are shown for reference only, marked not used.

CaptiveAire

CaptiveAire hood Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual (Air Measuring Multimeter, Calculating Make-up Air / Exhaust Air CFM, Figures 34–37: free areas and K-factors for Velocity Grid and Evergreen) and the CaptiveAire Hood Filtration Guide (filter free area, K 1.2). No UTAB CaptiveAire workbook has been found yet.

Halton

Method A: Actual CFM = Design CFM × √(measured SP ÷ design SP), run separately for the exhaust and the capture jet, with the design CFM and SP from the hood label or submittal (UTAB method). Method B: Halton KVL/KVL2/KVM hood K-factors by filter count (KSA filters) from the Halton “Hood K Factors” workbook supplied by UTAB; CFM = K × √ΔP. The same workbook has Halton KBD balancing-damper curves (KBD 8x8, 9x8, 11x8) as graphs only; read those off the chart.

Notes

All filter, plenum and port drawings on this page are simplified sketches made for ThePitot to help identify the part. They are not manufacturer drawings. Always check the factor against the submittal for the hood you are testing.
